The summer of 2003 was a hot one in the Deep South. But, for the young Atlanta-based street vending entrepreneur known as “Bootleg Slim”, it’s never too hot to be a savvy street corner vendor. When the opportunity to accompany a group of senior citizens on a gambling trip to Mississippi arises, the MARTA Five Points selling machine closes shop and boards a old, hot bus bound for the Redneck Riviera. His sales goals are only interrupted by teenage wanna-be gangsters, a band of mischievous senior ladies (the O.G.’s – old girls), and good-old boy hotel security. Oh, let’s not forget “Honey” – the prep school-bred daughter of one of the most respected civil rights families in the country. While laughing out loud at the foibles of our hero, you’ll gain a new respect for urban entrepreneurialism and the tenacity of the American small business owner.

I would direct fledgling authors to take note of how this book SHOWS instead of TELLS the reader what an adventure it is to accompany Bootleg Slim on a trip to the Mississippi Riviera. This is a great example of how to write dialogue (or in this 1st person case, monologue) that sings. Bootleg Slim's personality is established in the first few sentences, and he remains an entertaining (edutaining, lol) hustler throughout.I got to the part where he says, "She was all private school, private college-like. I find that the more restrictive the upbringing, the more sexually uninhibited women are. Like prisoners on furlough or something. That's the very reason all my kids going to public school." I had to LOL at that because it shows so much about who this character is.
I'm not a fan of much of today's barely edited "urban fiction," but this one is well-written. I read this in one sitting and was entertained by my "ride" with Bootleg and his cast of characters.

All I can say is WOW!!!!!! Annsonita Robinson deserves a standing ovation! I have a VERY short attention span, so, it normally takes me forever to finish a book because I typically lose interest. That was truly not the case when I read Bootleg Slim. First of all....it was in BIG print with SHORT chapters. I love that! More imporatantly, it was hillarious, engaging, & down right ingenious! I read it from start to finish in about an hour. That's a record for me! The way she painted pictures of the characters & their situations was amazing! It gave you that "to home" feeling because you know "folks" just like them. It's simply a "must read"!
This book was exhilarating. Bootleg was getting his hustle on. Realistic about Honey being of a different classy background. Bootleg has a very interesting life. I hope there will be sequel. I am not ready for this story to end.
What an awesome read. This author is really talented and a great story teller. A must have for your collection. I can't wait to see what else she does.
This short story provides an entertaining, humorous yet intense glimpse into the life of a 21st century bootlegger, his entrepreneurial skills and risks. Ms. Robinson's story telling ability is so vivid it brings Bootleg Slim and his activities to life. I look forward to the next episode in the life of Bootleg Slim.
Just downloaded, "Bootleg Slim Honey of a Bus Trip (The Chronicles of Bootleg Slim)". Annsonita Robinson's story telling is clear and concise. This is a funny book mixed with small nuggets of business knowledge. I can vividly imagine what each character looks and sounds like. Street smarts mixed with humor is a sweet combination.
What a fun ride! The personalities in Robinson's story are as vivid and colorful as they are accessible. The only thing better than the scrapes and tight spots that this hustler gets into are the wit and creativity he uses to navigate his way out! The pace caught me up from the very first paragraph and carried me straight through to the last word. Can't wait to see what comes next for Bootleg Slim!
It was a blast! I read the book in an hour...more like consumed it. Vivid detail, crisp dialogue, rapid pace, and the ultimate hustler on vacation made a fun journey. I'm looking forward to more of Bootleg Slim's escapades.
